Create a one-of-a-kind ceramic altar in this intimate, hands-on pottery workshop at The Clay Department in San Antonio.
For this small-group workshop, you’ll work with mica-rich clay sourced from Northern New Mexico to build a ceramic altar using forms, templates, custom stamps, and design techniques developed in the artist’s studio. You’ll be guided through the process of building and refining your piece while making intentional choices about form, composition, surface, and structure.
This is a guided handbuilding workshop, so no previous pottery experience is required. Whether you’re completely new to clay or you’ve taken pottery classes before, you’ll have hands-on instruction and individualized guidance throughout the evening.
You’ll create your own ceramic altar designed to be a meaningful object for your home. Each piece will be handmade, so no two altars will be exactly alike.
The workshop will cover:
Your finished piece will be professionally fired after the workshop and left unglazed. The natural surface of the mica-rich clay is the star of the finished work, revealing a warm, golden shimmer and subtle sparkle after firing.
Your $125 workshop includes:
No. This ceramic altar workshop is beginner-friendly and no prior clay experience is required. The workshop is designed for both beginners and returning pottery students, with guidance provided throughout the entire building process.
Because the pieces are intentionally left unglazed, the finished work will showcase the natural color, texture, and mica sparkle of the clay rather than a traditional glaze surface.
Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting clay on. Short nails are recommended because they make working with the clay easier and more enjoyable.
Come ready to slow down, work with your hands, and make something that is entirely your own.
